Learning and teaching of the Holy Quran are among the best deeds that a Muslim can perform, and are the main source of respect and integrity for him both in present world and in the Hereafter. There are countless narrations that urge us to learn and teach the Holy Quran and the following one is more well-known to Muslim in general.
The third rightly-guided Caliph, Uthman bin Uffan (RA) narrated that the Prophet (PBUH) said:
"The best of you is he who learns the Quran and teaches it." (Al-Bukhari 5027).
The virtues and characteristics of the Quran are stated as follows in Quran itself:
"The Quran is guidance and glad tidings for those who believe." (al-Baqara, 2/97).
"The Qur'an as a guide to mankind also clear (Signs) for guidance and judgment (between right and wrong) ..." (al-Baqara, 2/185).
"Do they not ponder on the Qur'an (with care)? Had it been from other than Allah, they would surely have found therein much discrepancy." (an-Nisa, 4/82).
"This Quran is a guidance and glad tidings for those who believe." (Sad, 38/29).
"And this is a Book which We have revealed as a blessing: so follow it and be righteous, that ye may receive mercy." (al-Anam, 6/155).
"And this is a Book which We have sent down, bringing blessings and confirming (the revelations) which came before it: that thou mayest warn the Mother of Cities and all around her. Those who believe in the Hereafter believe in this (Book), and they are constant in guarding their prayers." (al-Anam, 6/92).
The Quran is the Speech of Allah, and Allah’s Speech has superiority over the speech of humans just as the Creator has superiority and excellence over His creation; therefore learning and teaching is better and more virtuous than all other good and virtues deeds.
"Whoever call (others) to guidance, then he receives the reward similar to the reward of whoever follows him, without that diminishing anything form their rewards." (Muslim 2674).
This means, he who works actively for good and betterment, i.e., he who calls for the practice of the Holy Quran and the Sunnah by means of writing, literature, compilation, publication, its spread and propagation, preaching and exhortation, education and teaching, as long as these objects will remain and serve the aims and the people will keep benefiting from it, the one who initiated and performed such activities will also gain the reward.
In fact, the most remarkable aspect of teaching is that it gives a person a second life. In general, we all die, and our acts and deeds come to an end; but there are some exception that one can be rewarded for even after his death.
The Prophet (PBUH) said:
"When a person dies his deeds discontinue, except for three things:
a. Ongoing charity,
b. knowledge which people benefit from, and a
c. righteous son who prays for him."
(Recorded in Sahih Muslim 1631).
In short, without a doubt, we should not diminish the significant of learning and teaching knowledge in Islam. And yet it is important to know that not all knowledge is the same. Some parts or branches of knowledge are more significant than others. If this is the case, then there is no doubt that the best and the most superior field and branch study is the Holy Book of Allah (SWT). Therefore, the one who learns and teaches the Glorious Quran is far better than someone who learns and teaches any other field of study or knowledge and therefore, our beloved Prophet (PBUH) said:
"Allah has His own people among mankind. The companions said: O Messenger of Allah! Who are they? He (PBUH) said: The people of the Quran, the people of Allah and those who are closest to Him." (Ibn Majah 215).
